Problems in Laser Physics by Giulio Cerullo, X

Problems in Laser Physics by Giulio Cerullo, X
This book presents the first comprehensive collection of solvedproblems in laser physics covering both fundamental and appliedaspects of laser science and technology. The framework of the book, including structuring of topics and notations, closely follows thatadopted in the "Principles of Laser" book by Professor O. Svelto. The collection of problems presented in this book appears therefore anatural complement to Svelto's textbook for testing and developing theskills acquired in the reading of the theory; however, it may also bea useful support to any general textbook on laser physics, whereinproblems are usually not solved in detail. We remark that this is, toour knowledge, the first book to provide a complete and satisfactoryset of solved problems in such a highly developing field of scienceand technology. The problems fall mainly into three distinctcategories: (i) "numerical/applied problems," which help thereader to become confident and familiar with the basic concepts andmethods of laser physics, and to acquire a feeling for numericalparameters entering in real-world laser systems; (ii) "complementaryproblems," that present in detail demonstrations of some analyticalparts not given in the textbook; and (iii) "advanced problems," aimed either to provide a deeper understanding of the subject or tocover more recent developments in the field."Audience: " This book is primarily intended for undergraduate andgraduate students in physics, engineering, and chemistry. However, itmay also be a useful tool for industrial professionals working in thefield of laser technologies and laser applications, as well as forresearchers interested in basic aspects of real-world lasers andrelated fields.

Tunable Laser Diodes and Related Optical Sources
Tunable Laser Diodes and Related Optical Sources
The phenomenal growth in Internet traffic has lead to a huge increase in demand for data transmission capacity on a worldwide level. As a result, wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technology emerged, which makes it possible to transmit a large number of optical channels on a single optical fiber. An equally significant development occurred in optical networks, where switching and routing of signals takes place in the optical domain. This technology places special demands on the optical sources (lasers) used in the system. This text offers a description of the optical sources (equipment and devices) designed to meet these demands. Sources for DWDM Systems is intended for the engineers and graduate students working on optical networks. There is currently a nearly explosive interest in optical networks and the components required for such networks, but there is presently no single work which covers the variety of optical sources which may be used. This book will cover a particular component, tunable lasers, which is the next "big thing" in DWDM. The primary market are engineers developing tuneable lasers for optical networks, as well as graduate students enrolled in the optical engineering curriculum, especially: optical communication, semiconductor lasers, optical networks, and/or components for optical networks.

Laser pointer - A laser pointer is a product that includes a small, inexpensive laser in a portable, pen-shaped format. Due to their low output, laser pointers do not project a visible beam in normal, clear air - rather, their light is visible as a small point of light where the beam intersects a surface.

Charles Townes - Charles Hard Townes (born July 28, 1915) is an American physicist and educator. Townes is known for his work on the theory and application of the maser, on which he obtained the fundamental patent, and other work in quantum electronics connected with both maser and laser devices.

Jonathan A Jones - Jonathan A Jones (born in 1967) is University Lecturer in Atomic and Laser Physics at Oxford University, and Fellow and Tutor in Physics at Brasenose College, Oxford. Although trained in chemistry he is better known for his work in physics, especially for his work on NMR quantum computation for which he was awarded the 2000 Marlow Medal of the Royal Society of Chemistry.

Adaptations of standard artillery systems were commonly used for most long-range anti-aircraft artillery, starting with standard pieces on new mountings, and evolving to custom guns with much higher performance prior to World War I, growing in power and accuracy over the years. Nicknames for anti-aircraft guns continued. Unlike the heavier guns, these smaller weapons are still in widespread use today for the same reasons as they were originally introduced, that missile systems in the 1950s.
