Emil Telmányi - Emil Telmányi invented the Bach bow in the 20th century. The Bach bow makes use of a system of levers to temporarily slacken the bow hair and allow sustained three or four note chords (double stop); this design has no historical precedent and is less authentic than an ordinary modern bow for playing baroque (or any other) music.

Col legno - Col legno (Italian for with the wood) is a method of playing bowed string instruments (particularly the violin, viola, cello, and double bass) whereby the strings are struck with the wood of the bow rather having the hair pulled across them. There is also a technique called col legno tratto in which the player drags the wood of the bow instead of striking the string.

Terminal hair - Terminal hair is developed hair, which is generally longer, coarser, thicker, and darker than vellus hair. Phases of growth in terminal hair are more apparent than in vellus hair; terminal hair generally has a longer anagen phase.
